Well....fixed. I talked to tech support. First thing they advised was to remove the oft offending foam...."you don't need it". Second check the blower fan on the shaft as they slip. Did both and problem solved.
Upon reexamining things, there was one spot where the foam had started to pull away from the side and was the likely cause of the rubbing sound....but wasn't particularly obvious as a problem first time through.
