FWIW, I find the sound of the constant up and down of an inverter generator powering a cycling microwave or a cycling air conditioner compressor way more irritating than a constant hum.
I find it painful to hear a little 1600 watt generator like the eu2000i Honda straining to run a 1500 watt load and then back down until the next demand. Really fun when they wail off into overload land. At least that silences them until they are restarted.
