Have you considered why you change the oil in an engine? If it sits without being ran for a year, do you really think you need to change the oil? Do you change oil because it is old?
Personally, I don't think I have ever followed the recommended oil change schedule on any engine I have owned. I honestly have never wore an engine out. The only engines I have ever had to rebuild was due to the previous owner running them without oil, overheating them or mechanical abuse.
