Personally, I don't think I have ever followed the recommended oil change schedule on any engine I have owned. I honestly have never wore an engine out. The only engines I have ever had to rebuild was due to the previous owner running them without oil, overheating them or mechanical abuse.
Not really. Just a 'knee jerk' thing with me other than my farm tractors and vehicles which I do a Blackstone analysis on.
Besides, most all new engines have a 'low oil shutdown' now so running them dry is pretty much a thing of the past...
