Brakes overheated, could the bearing be the cause

Finally got the left rear brake caliper off today. I actually read the shop manual I have and followed the directions. (If you've read some of my recent posts, you'll get the joke).

The caliper and pad slid right off the disc once I got the key out at the bottom that holds it in. It makes me a little concerned that the pads dragging were not the cause of the overheating. The pads look in good shape and not overly worn. I suppose though that the brakes would overheat long before the pads would wear down.

My concern is the wheel bearing could have been the source of the heat. There was no squealing of squeaking from that wheel.

I guess I'll just have to READ THE MANUAL and follow the directions for inspecting the wheel bearings.

  • Last summer I drove about 20 miles to a a campground. The left rear got so hot it boiled the brake fluid (temporarily lost the brakes) and they were smoking. Drove home by stopping every few miles for it too cool off. Checked the disc temp at each stop with an IR temp gun. It got over 400 degrees by time I got home.

I'm thinking of just cleaning and greasing slides on the caliper (they've been neglected) and replacing the break hose.
  • Brakes can and do get red hot when braking, check red hot brake rotors on youtube!
The question is there differential temperature one side to the other. Brake pistons/calipers can be defective sticking etc. causing problems.
  • Go back and restate the conditions causing the overheating along with the symptoms. Brakes can get rather hot and smell and still be fine after cooling off.

I honestly think if the bearing got that hot you would have lost the axle... how hot was it again?
  • Is this on the MH, truck or something else?
    When was it hot?
