Breaking in new batteries?

Ok battery gurus, looking for opinions.I just replaced the 6 volt batteries in my golf cart with brand new Trojan T105,s.Is it better to run them down aways and then charge them,or run them down a little bit and charge more frequently? BTW I also have two chargers. The bigger one charges at about a 25 amp rate, the smaller one charges at about a 5 amp rate. They both shut off when the batteries are charged.Which would be better for battery life?

You don't need opinions, you need facts.

With a lead-acid battery, it is best to NOT run it any lower than you need to, even if it is a "deep cycle" type. And it make no difference how much or little you use from it before charging within it's normal capacity.

The charger question isn't quite so clear cut but slower is generally better. Use the big one when you NEED TO and don't worry about it.

    No, Soundguy, the OP doesn’t....

There is no reason to charge with 5A when 25A is half of recommended maximum for a pair of T105. Not that you can't shove higher yet currents down.

You need to know voltages of these chargers on all stages of charging process (if it can do it in stages, to begin with). Many "automated" chargers either have bulk voltage wrong, or don't have Absorb or Float stage, and as a result either under-charge or over-heat the battery (and still can leave it under-charged when it shuts down).

Presumably you understand that the Trojan T-105 as a pair require a bulk charge voltage of 14.82 volts ... can either of these chargers do this? :@
  • “better to run them down aways and then charge them”

Your choice. The lower you run wets down the fewer the cycles you get.

    Read and consider... http://www.trojanbattery.com/products/deep-cycle-flooded/signature-line-flooded-2/
  • Trojan has a very good website in which they explain exactly how to recharge their batteries.

Your automatic chargers shut off BEFORE the battery is truly full. Also their amps don't matter so much as what voltages they do in their charging "profiles." Read the Trojan bumph and do what it says :)
  • Nothing I've ever read about acid batteries mentions anything about what you're asking. There's google if you want to look it up.
