Broken Awning Ratchet Mechanism

I have a 2007 Jayco 30.5BHS fifth Wheel with a 20 foot awning. The ratchet mechanism when you deploy the awning does not work. Something is broken inside and the lever does not engage when moved to the open position. So when you pull the strap to unroll the awning it does not ratchet (click). If you let go of the strap it will roll back up and slam against the trailer (this has never happened by the way). But to keep the awning open you must lock down the two telescoping bars on the end of the awning. The ratchet system does seem to work when closing the awning....move the lever to close it engages and clicks all the way back to the rolled up stowed position. So my question is can this mechanism be replaced? and how much of a bear is it to do.....can a competant do it yourselfer fix it or should I just bring it to the shop?
