As I recall the majority of the posts I read in that thread, My own included, said "With a proper controller yes" some went on to explain why....

Of course I have not re-visited the thead since that is about the limit of what I have to say and others have covered it as well.

As to the idea of monitoring the voltage till it gets high enough and then disconnecting.. You gonna sit there and watch grass grow too? That won't work.

If there is no current flow, nothing will happen. At 14.5 volts, there is likely to be current flow. How much depends on the source. If it is a 1.5 amp charger then the flow will be limited to 1.5 amps or less. If it is an 80 amp, it will be 80 or less. There will be a spark. The spark size will be proportional to current flow. At 14.5 volts, there will be gassing. Hydrogen gas and arcs in close proximity do not mix well. Can you spell Hindenburg?

To bad a person has to start a thread to make it his "personal" vendetta. I read the original thread that I think he refers to, as a tongue in cheek reply. there are several so called "experts" on solar information that, IMO, are full of it up to their ears, including some that are published and have a cult following. Do I jump on the bandwagon and start a thread that is a vendetta, NO, I just move on with the knowledge I can find what I think is correct, or more correct information elsewhere.........

A 24v panel might have 8 amps for Isc, which is about the most amps you can get from it? So regardless of its voltage above the battery voltage for voltage spread, AFAIK you can't get more than 8 amps?

If the battery is at 12.2v and is getting 8 amps, eventually it will reach 14.5v. With an ordinary manual charger you have to disconnect it yourself once the battery voltage reaches your target or it will overcharge. What is different in this case?

If it is a portable charger, always turn it off and unplug the charger before disconnecting from the battery.

I used a 70 ampere 90 volt array bypassing the MPPT regulator last year to equalize one single two volt cell. Yes, the voltage has to be closely monitored, and manipulated once your chosen mechanical set point has been reached.
