Buy it new? Or fix it.

5 year old Ultra Fab 3002 tongue jack on a toyhauler. Switch finally gave up the ghost, so I replaced it. Kinda tough to find – had to go to an auto parts store to find the “on-off-on” spring to center switch. Crimped on new terminals, and stuffed it all back in the housing after shrink wrapping the terminals to prevent shorts. A couple of weeks pass…. Suddenly no workee. Pull the switch out, test the terminals with a meter (with battery disconnected.) Switch is good. OK, start troubleshooting – Battery charged? Check. Power as far as the fuse? Check. Fuse good? Check. Connect battery (still no switch operation), and jiggle the fuse in the holder with the switch held on and – AAAHHAAA! Connection on the “protected” side of the fuse holder was a little sloppy. Put the fuse in, crimped down on the connection and the switch is back in operation.

Moral of the story – troubleshooting starts at the last thing changed (in this case the switch), but then continues at the source of the power, and eliminate each thing until the problem is found.

BTW – a new jack would have cost approx. $150.

Fixed for free? Priceless.
