Thanks for the replies, everyone, I appreciate the help. For those who asked why bother about changing the caps, I have found on some of my father's equipment trailers set up with similar systems that the plastic/rubber seal between the cap and the grease fitting deteriorates or gets loose, then leaks water into the hub and holds it there. A couple sheet metal caps cost very little, and aren't going to let water in nearly as easily.
Besides, I like to see that the inner seals are still good, as well as the bearing surfaces, etc. so I prefer to do this job manually.
I do agree that the extra grease would be of less concern on these little trailers without brakes; thanks for pointing that out!
