Can I jump fridge gas valve for TS purposes?

annnnddd.....never mind, cooling unit is toast...:(
I noticed almost immediately that the freezer section was getting hotter pretty quick, and no difference in the fridge section. Only took about an hour or so before the fridge filled with ammonia smell so much that it gagged me when I opened the door to check the temp.
So this one is done....now to decide if I want to cross my fingers on a replacement cooling unit plus new control board and maybe a gas valve or the kit if I can find one, or just ante up for a whole new fridge...
