Can I jump fridge gas valve for TS purposes?

Fridge in the "new-to-me" camper is a Dometic RM3604 3 way. I was unable to check the function of any of the appliances before purchase of the camper, so I do not know when it was last operational.

Turns out fridge has issues. Appears to turn on, but wouldn't cool down on any mode (120VAC, 12VDC, or LP). Went through the checks via the service manual, and appears to be a faulty circuit board - not sending any voltage to AC heating element in AC mode, sending only 5VDC to the relay when in 12VDC mode, and cycling power to the gas valve solenoid when in LP mode. Igniter seems to be working OK, but it's not getting gas past the solenoid valve.

I don't have a problem buying a new circuit board for it, but I'd like to verify the rest of it works OK before doing so, as worst case scenario, if I have to buy a new cooling unit and gas valve in addition to the circuit board, I'm getting awfully close to the cost of a whole new fridge at that point (and haven't even found a source for the gas solenoid valve if that's the case).

So I'm wondering if I can just jump power to that gas valve to verify it's actually functioning properly, and to make sure the cooling unit is OK?
  • annnnddd.....never mind, cooling unit is toast...:(

I noticed almost immediately that the freezer section was getting hotter pretty quick, and no difference in the fridge section. Only took about an hour or so before the fridge filled with ammonia smell so much that it gagged me when I opened the door to check the temp.

So this one is done....now to decide if I want to cross my fingers on a replacement cooling unit plus new control board and maybe a gas valve or the kit if I can find one, or just ante up for a whole new fridge...
  • The fridge in the 1981 11 ft slide-in camper we got in 2015 (sold last year) was toast on arrival. Tried a 3.2cuft 120v fridge for a while. Bad for off grid on inverter and batteries even with 300w of solar. Never again! Need propane fridge for off-grid unless you have sunshine every day almost. Found a nice used one that was not a pilot light type (hate that pilot business!) Got it to fit with some hammer and saw work. Think it was Dometic 7001 IIRC. Was in a Class B originally.
  • I'm not completely up the creek yet, as I do have a Norcold 60L/2.1CF portable 12VDC/120VAC fridge that I used to run in the back of the Suburban. It's a bummer to lose some floor space to the fridge and a couple deep cycle batteries to run it, but still beats warm soda or having to deal with ice in a cooler. But it will be enough to hold me over for a while until I either find a deal on something used, or decide to buy new.
