Can the springs on slide toppers be re-tensioned?

I was told by a local RV Tech that the springs on my slide toppers could not be tightened up. Is this true, or was he "blowing smoke"?
I know from experience that the spring on garage door openers can be tightened up.

    two different things, how can you compare a garage door spring to an awning spring. from what I have seen on the awning tension I would say no you can not. unless you take the awning out of the grove that holds it and try to put more pressure on it, but I don't think I would want to try it.
