Can't run A/C at home: solved -- see 8/21/16 update

For what you want to do, you could rig up a window AC or portable AC unit. If the latter, make sure it comes with both intake and exhaust hoses to run out the window (not an exhaust hose alone... I found out the hard way). These will run on a house circuit. Your roof AC may be sucking too many amps for your house circuits, particularly when the compressor kicks in.
