I think it is time to stop speculating here. I may get an electrician to check this out before anyone gets hurt. Too much conflicting advice from too many really knowledgeable folks.
For what it is worth, yes the fan and the compressor both shut down after running for about a minute, and then they both restarted after being off for about ten seconds, and then shut down after ten more seconds, and then I switched everything off.
And no, I was not using a dog bone -- this is a very simple little one-piece adapter that enables me to plug the 30 amp cord into an ordinary 3 prong outlet. This arrangement easily runs everything in the trailer, but not the a/c!
