CHECKING VOLTAGES WITH A METER
slip on a pair of Nitrile home and exam gloves.
The digital multimeter and wire leads is rated for 500 volts no sweat.
Connect black meter lead to negative on the meter.
Connect positive to the positive volts connection.
Switch the meter dial to the correct position.

Meter lead probes need to be monkey'd around a bit in each vertical "plug-in". It does not matter which slot you you the red and black probes in. Use patience and worm the metal probes around in the two slots. It's hard to do but intentionally crossing the meter lead metal tips will cause a short. You'd really have to work at fanagling the leads to cause a short.
Relax! This is easy. I could have checked 30 outlets in the time it took to write this.
