Caulking for reinstallation of window frame on 5er

I had one of the back windows break on my 5er. I got the window frame out and had a piece of Lexan put in the frame. I need to reinstall the frame. When I pulled the frame out it was sealed with some caulking or putty but I don't know what type. Does anyone know what I need to use to seal the frame to the wall when I reinstall it?

  • Butyl tape - available at any RV parts house. YouTube has nice vid of how to recaulk rv windows.
  • Actualy it is butyl tape. There are several companies that make it, 3M is one.
Home Depot and Lowes both sell it.
  • It is putty tape. You stick it to the window mounting flange, then install the window tightening the screws evenly until all are snug. Then trim of the excess that has squished out, can be quite a bit depending on the smoothness of the outer skin of the trailer. Then run a bead of caulk all the way around the window.
  • If it is the stuff that stays flexible (i.e. you can still pull some of it off the wall and work it and stick it back on) - the stuff is electricians putty or what most call "monkey crap". I don't know what MFG's use but if I pulled one, I'd use this.
