What are the API service categories of the oils? What one does the engine literature call for as a minimum (if any)?
Frankly, for five hours of break in, I don't think any difference between small engine and automotive oil would be of importance. It won't be in use anywhere near long enough for the additives to be consumed; the main goal is to collect any microscopic bits of manufacturing debris or metal dust from the initial breaking in of the moving parts and clean it out.
Kind of my thought too DrewE. The owners manual only says 10W30 automotive, no service category. I think most auto oils are SJ rated or higher, many SN rated.
Since there are lots of Champ gen owners, I was curious what dino, they used, and if they later moved to synthetic after break-in, with any noticeable results. Owner's manual does say you can use synthetic, after break-in.
