Champion 2K generator oil

My new Champion 2K generator 100565 specifies using 10-30 automotive oil for first 5 hour break-in. I would think a small engine 10-30 would be a better choice. I have Honda power equipment 10-30 on hand, for my mower, which seems a better choice than automotive oil?

I am wondering what oil, other Champion owners are using for break-in oil, and also if moving to synthetic after break-in, what works best.

  • The oil doesn't know what size engine it is in. My opinion is that oil labeled for small engines is just a way to charge more for snake oil.
  • I just use regular automobile semi-synthetic oil. If they wanted you to use some special oil they would have said so in the manual. It doesn't stay in the generator long enough to pay for full synthetic.
