The inverter changes 12VDC to 120v AC generally from the batteries. The converter converts 120VAC to DC. This DC charges the batteries. Eliminate the converter and the batteries will not charge and soon the inverter will shut off. If you want AC when not plugged in you need to charge the batteries. It takes both.
