In order to treat the batteries kindly in recharging, can I attach my charger clamps at batteries 2 and 3, in the front half of the drawer, or should I bother to reach to the back to charge at the same terminals the built-in charger uses, on batteries 1 and 4?

Best to attach in a balanced manor or at each end of the stack. Without a pick I can't really know what two are where electrically. At 40 amps into four batteries it is not going to be a huge difference like the 100 amps from inverter. Charge in the mornings and let the solar balance things out the rest of the day.
