Charging 50A 5er with Generator 30A Receptacle

My 5th Wheel has 50A service and I have a 30A to 50A dogbone in case I camp where 50A is not available but 30A is. Can I use that same dogbone and plug that into my Champion Inverter Generator 30A receptacle to charge my battery if boondocking? I'm thinking the answer is yes since I would be doing that very thing using the camp site pedestal power but wanted to hear it from the experts and make sure there isn't anything I need to be aware of.

You should be able to find a 30A-50A long Adapter from WALMART but can also be ordered from AMAZON.

This is a diagram what you need to pickup. The 30A side has MALE connectors and the 50A side has FEMALE connectors.

You can see in the diagram that the two hots are tied together so the 30A SERVICE will feed both of your 50A legs in your trailer.

Here is another diagram showing this example.

As stated above you will have to watch which high wattage appliances are being used at the same time as you only have a total of 30AMPS to use from the generator. If you try to use both air conditioners at same time it will trip the 30A GENERATOR BREAKER.

  • The receptacle is a TT-30 and the 30A to 50A dog bone I have plugs into it.

Assuming the receptical on the Champion is a TT-30 yes.

If it is a twist lock with 3 "slots" then you need a Generator adapter"
If it is a Twist lock with 4 Slots. a different generator adapter.
  • You are thinking correctly. Consider solar. No plugging required.
