40 years ago as a young electrician wiring new houses in new building tract
We wired the kitchen and utility/laundry room with split outlets
Two 120v 20 amp circuits ran around the kitchen, 3 Wire with ground ( red, black, white, and ground)
One cable, two circuits
One circuit on the top of the outlet, one circuit on the bottom of the outlet
The tab on the side broken off ( that's what it is for )
We used 20 amp outlets
This was the specified wiring pattern, I can't remember if this was local code, or just good design planning by the builder
There are good reasons for using 12 gauge wire and 20 amp plugs
That's why they exist, and the break off tabs that it seems nobody uses anymore
