Not true anymore. Abuot 10-15 years ago, all light/medium duty vehicle manufacturers went to "smart" charging system. A few minutes after the engine is started, the output from the alternator and its internal regulator will be about 13.6-13.8V. Certainly less than 14.0V.
Not enough to properly recharge a deep cycle battery bank to is at 50% DOD.
