"Smart" my hind end :)
Hanging a thermistor next to the mass airflow sensor is a temp sensor for the ECU as well as the alternator. The setup works good for the chassis battery but sucks sour owl eggs for a remote battery. Such a setup can be rated "above zero" meaning better than nothing. It functions exactly like a refrigerator 12-volt heater - once it gets cold it will warm up a lot slower. But really helpless to actually reduce temperature. (Get the anology here?)
