I don't always track the sun. Even flat at some point and time in the day they will hit the high numbers, then again I only summer camp. I'd be tracking if we were in the Q right now. :)
I do agree with giving the controllers a margin. I have read of someone blowing their controller by going over a 12000 ft pass on a freezing cold sunny fall day. My own cold weather testing has shown me that I have to factor in what my gear does where I camp, not at sea level. Any panel that would bump the controllers limits at sea level will fry it daily where I camp.
