Check Engine Light

I have a 2004 6.0 F250 diesel. Everything has been fine until I jumpstarted my Tractor. Now I have a check engine light on. Checked voltage while running 14.2 that sounds good to me. Disconnected batteries for 20 minutes started truck everything sounds normal and then the light comes back on ????????????? Any Ideas?

  • ...and a thanks to you for coming back and reporting. It's nice to hear that our advice worked, and it helps me learn.
  • For future reference... any vehicle made 1996 and up has to be OBDII compliant. VW/Audi are one of the few that have extra 5-digit codes that only a special scanner (VAG-COM) can pull but nonetheless OBDII can still pull 90% of the codes from them anyways. So if you can't hook up the OBDII and get codes then there is a problem like you encountered.
  • Thanks for the input. Went to Autozone, Thanks downtheroad. The guy said sometimes Fords will blow a fuse periodically when you try to jumpstart something. Sure enough a 20 amp fuse had blown leaving the computer diagnostic port dead. Replaced fuse and now the scanner will work. I cleared a p2285 fuel pressure sensor code and took a long test drive and everything is all good again. No more jumpstarts with that truck. ScottG I will take your advise also.
  • Just an FYI, you should never have a modern vehicle running while you use it to jump another. It causes surges and spikes that will kill some electronics. I learned this one the hard way..
  • I have a OBD2 scanner but it does not work on the truck. Only works on our cars .
  • Best place to start is to get a code. Go over to Auto Zone. They have a code reader and will run a check and pull the code for free.
