Ah, the debate rages on: I took out the anode in my heater (not HOT water heater) in 2007 because of stinky water and put a ball valve in it's place. 7 years and still going. Maybe I'm living on borrowed time but the chemical reaction with the local water and ? made the water stink SO bad that on a neighbors advice I removed it and plugged it. Immediately the smell was gone. So I put a drain valve in it's place and can flush the tank quickly and often.
