Check your water heater anode!

It's the time of year when many people are preparing to winterize their RV's and I just wanted to offer up a friendly reminder that this is also a good time to drain & flush your hot water tank and inspect & replace the sacrificial anode rod (for those who have 'em).

I have chosen to use an anode rode that is made from pure magnesium. Mag' is more anodic than aluminum (or aluminum/zinc alloy) and as a result it only lasts one season…. But I'd much rather replace the anode annually than worry about galvanic corrosion in my hot water heater's (porcelain-lined) steel tank.

Cheers,
-Mark

New magnesium anode rod.

One year old anode rod.
  • Ok, I've seen these pix before and I always thought that the nut that holds in the anode needs to be in electrical contact with the water heater to work properly. Almost every pic I see, the nut has Teflon tape. Isn't that also an insulator?
