Having our house furnace ducts cleaned a few times and watched, what I’ve seen is the openings get blocked off (with cardboard laying on the floor so in the ceiling might need to be taped up), then attaching a large vac to suck stuff through, opening each one to clear it. On solid metal ducts, I’ve seen a brush ran through.
