Cold Weather Warm Up

Hi all,

Cold weather warm up time. This morning at 4 a.m. I went out, started the generator, plugged in the block heater and two electric heaters, and turned on the furnace. The ambient temperature was -18 C (0 F). Heat input to my 28 foot class C was about 25000 BTU's between the furnace and electric heaters. In 30 minutes, the interior temperature had risen to -10 C (14 f). As a side light, the Yamaha 2800 sIEB took several tries before it started. It took its time before it provided AC power to the RV.
  • You have discovered just how poor the insulation is on RVs. Even ru ning everything full blast you will be lucky to get it to 60.
  • Last winter prior to leave for the southlands I found all my exterior doors had frozen locks. Got that fixed but forgot the fuel doors also had locks and did not thaw them. At the first fuel station I needed to get it done and was shocked on how long it took. Not only frozen compartments but the locks themselves need attention.
  • A word of warning. At these temperatures, it is not uncommon for the exterior compartments to freeze shut. It behooves the owner to have a method for thawing them (a radiant heater, for example), or to carry sufficient cords inside the RV or both.
  • After 90 minutes (5:40 am) the Ambient temperature remains at -18 and the interior of the RV has reached 8 C (46 f).

It looks as if I timed this well so that my cleaning lady will be able to do her magic.

I'm "pushing" the Yamaha to the edge of its abilities. I do this by monitoring the charging voltage from the Magnum inverter--and the output voltage. When there is 13 volts of charging the alternating current is about 115 volts, I'm at the edge.

If I go "beyond" the capacity, then charging voltage drops to 12.2 (useless, at these temperatures). When that happens I reduce the load on the generator.
