Thinking of the "replace compressor" point made above, an appliance tech told me that compressor windings develop additional resistance with age, therefore draw more amps, therefore harder to start, therefore even damaging a start device. So a "boost" like 5-2-1 can allow a tired compressor to work a little longer. Maybe a lot longer. I put a SUPCO kit on a Whirlpool fridge 10 years ago. It had "eaten" the original start assist and that cheap fix has had it running ever since.
