No, he didn't :)
He said that he couldn't get it to 14.3 and stay there for 2 hours. Conditions included clouds and smoke. Worn out battery could also behave differently.
10% DOD of 300AH bank means he doesn't need much current. With "some" sun through the smoke - let's say when you see the disc and it is bright enough to be not able to look at it - he should get to Absorb before noon and exit Absorb 2-3 hours later. It still doesn't hurt having more solar, because smoke haze coupled with clouds could double and triple the needed time, and more solar would counter this effect.
But, since he can't add more solar, he should at least upgrade solar controller to have self-adjusting Absorb time (and upgrade generator charging system too).
