Yes, and this was at 4.30 pm, and controller still wanted to stay in Absorb - because the timer restarted several times, last time it was less than 2 hours ago.

You need Absorb time to be self-adjusting.
I would't be comfortable with raising Float to 14.3 and doing Absorb in Float (to avoid all these dropping off and restarting timer again). Float should be what it should be. Depending on somebody's particular use, optimal Float might differ by 0.1.-0.2V from where the factory says it should be, but not as high as 14.x.
For shorter solar days, you want the higher voltage all day, and it "floats" at night.
In the summer, with the batts getting to full before lunch, then you want it to drop to 13.x.
If gen charging in the morning and then going to solar it would depend on how much daylight remains what to do.
