Yes, it should work (I've actually dug through the schematics, specs, etc of the Honda). The way their circuit is designed, it senses for voltage on the output, if there is AC voltage there, the circuit tries to sync up the output of the inverter to this voltage, if it can't it trips the safety and stops trying.
All that being said, I've never tried tying the Honda to a "hot main" and starting it.
