Thanks for the good advice with this. I will install the 020s in both the new and old units I have and see if I can get both working.
I did it before where you see that burnt 020 in the "old." There was the smaller SCK in there before that I was able to remove and replace with that one. It did work for a time after that and then I think I did the restart thing (not positive on that now, memory is blurry from the excitement when it happens) and there was the puff of smoke :(
Salvo, I don't know exactly when they failed each time, but I think it was always after a restart rather than on an initial start, I'm just not sure. And yes, the design does seem to be a work in progress, with me as the guinea pig :)
Sometimes but not always it would make some loud snaps on start-up that made me think it had blown, but it was ok. ( I was gun-shy by then anyway) Was a post here saying that is the caps from starting at top dead centre or whatever it was in the cycle--way over my head (all this is!)
Good point on the generator. I have measured the 124v output several times so that is ok, but I wonder if there is something that happens when it does pop its breaker from me adding too many things at once that hurts the charger just then. It would be right after that when I do the restart which is the time I have seen the smoke from the charger happen on the restart of the gen and then turn on the charger (too soon maybe and at too high an initial amps?)
I don't think I ever had charger trouble when there was no gen overload and a restart, but just a straight gen run. The hard part is even though I had already got all the good earlier advice in this thread last May, and knew what to do (wait etc) when it happened later I still ran around trying to get the charge going again and didn't keep good track of the time before restarting. :( so I still can't say for sure if I waited over a minute or so or not, or if it happened anyway even though I did wait.
