On the older one this could be so. Doubt that though. It has the internal voltage pot and was not really meant to be played with normally.
The newer unit has that same pot controlled from the outside where it is meant to be adjusted by the user. Presumably (!) the design allows for the voltage to be played up or down within the physical movement of the pot knob to the high and low voltages you can get to, without wrecking anything. Mine can go from 10.5 to 15.5v. the spec on the actual model says it can go up to 16.5v ISTR, so mine (a prototype I think) has been wired a little off I guess.
