I understand everyone is giving his best advice based on the info available, which is not much. At the end of the day, I will have to do something.
Another thing mentioned earlier was how leaving it on after the start-up, leaves the thermistor at its R rating where it might slowly cook.
If I used this as a real converter, it would be on shore power for many days, so that could bring out the trouble that way. That has never been done with mine. As it is, I don't get many hours on it in several months, but have done some repeated starts and it failed then in flame and smoke after a while doing that. It did not happen the first few times, so accumulative must be right, as suggested.
So there may be two ways for the converter to eat itself. cook slowly or fast. I was hoping that 2R, 300J 25amper would answer both situations. ?
