How much resistance is required is dependent on the diode rectifier. What's the maximum diode surge current? Typical surge current could be around 300A (non-repetitive). That means the resistance needs to be greater than:
R = 170V / 300A = 0.56 ohms
2 ohms is more than enough to keep the diodes from frying.
