BFL, where is that potentiometer in the circuits of the charger? Do you have any information from the mfg. stating that the pot can be adjusted to the higher voltages or if it should even be used at all?
The reason for my questions is that depending on which part of the device is being adjusted (i.e. what part of the which circuit is being adjusted), you may be asking the charger to do something that part of it's circuits dislike. If the pot adjusts quiescent current between two transistors and if those devices and the rest of the circuit have enough maximum draw capability, it may exceed the capability of the thermistor. I think you may be "hot rodding" the charger enough so that inrush current is spiking and beyond the capability of the thermistor. You could also have a problem with part of the charging circuit, failed transistor, shorted winding in the transformer, or any number of other bits that draw excessive current.
If you have the factory team on your side, I would have a conversation with them about what is happening and your methods. That may bring some insight as to the problems. If it was my charger, I wouldn't operate it without the thermistor working.
