BFL, connect the batteries to the converter before you power the converter up.
My guess is the surge current demanded by the batteries when connecting coupled to the hot thermister resistance is causing the failure.
Run your generator to warm it up, and after its warm, plug the converter in.
I bet if you follow this procedure, your thermister will survive.
