It was too hot to leave a finger tip on like a hot stove you say ouch. That was the damaged 5R020, so that proves ? it was working, and not just being by-passed so the other components had to take all the weight as westend feared?
As seen in the photos the converter fan is right beside the thermistor and the fan comes on every so often when it gets warm in that area.
I will try the 2R025 anyway, since the 5R020s don't seem to last. OTOH, whatever that big one was in the newer design converter, it flamed too and fell to bits. It would be good to know its specifications, but I haven't been able to get that info yet.
So far it does seem the converter will start ok and no smoke of flame after that whether you clamp on first or last using the 5R020 as long as it is a cold start and not a re-start.
There remains the possible cumulative effect towards failure from either too many starts or from too long at steady state running.
