The thermistor material insulates the 120V. But as you have seen many times now, this material crumbles when heat stressed. Now the 120V is exposed. You see the red glow of the wire.
It would now be a health hazard if the converter's case is electrically connected to your chassis.

I was wondering if the "mass" part of the thermistor is "live" or just the wires inside it and the legs. If not live then it could be leaned against the big metal heat sink in the converter? The leg wires are flexible so it would be easy to push it over to lean on the heat sink if that would help with overheating. The remark above suggests it would short against the heat sink though.
I guess it would be easy enough to look for 120 with a meter on the surface of the mass before trying that though.
