Like many of us have said, it is very difficult to give a reasonable answer without having schematics, part numbers, and data sheets, unless of course you're Salvo and are just guessing.
So keep the 5 ohm part, connect the battery bank before turning on, and don't do any hot restarts and you should be fine.
As a side note, having the thermister act as a fuse is still better than possibly destroying the transformer, diode bridge, PCB, etc... which could be a possibility if you replace the thermister with one that has a cold resistance that is to low...
