Converter on Low AC Input Example

Converter specs say 105v minimum to work right. On 15a long extension cord from house, running 75 amp converter on low batteries, was getting 56 amps as constant amps instead of 75.

Voltmeter said "120" in RV receptacle circuit the converter was in while running was 99.8v. So the converter does work below that 105v, sort of.

Fired up the Honda gen and plugged RV into that and amps now 75.4 with 120v up where it should be for converter specs.

  • Don't have EMS. The 99.8v was loaded voltage of course. Does the EMS kick in from unloaded or wait till load comes on and kill that?

It may seem to work down there but its regulation circuit is likely to get very hot and fail. I would not run it that way.

Good point. I changed to the Honda to get more amps. Didn't think of possible damage to the converter.

Of course the converter can suffer damage, it's the raison d'être for protecting any rig's electrical system, including the converter, with an EMS which will disconnect power to the rig anytime it detects excessively low incoming source voltage.

Also might not be good for the extension cord either. Ends might get warm/hot and eventually fail.
