I completely understand, I went through a very similar process. However, your problem is the nature of the beast. The Magnatek isn't smart enough to know it's disconnected from the battery, and as such it shouldn't be operated that way. You'll either need to figure out a way to always remember to connect the battery when you hook up to shore power (maybe a little red flag tied to the shore power plug) or replace the converter. No matter what you do with your future upgrades, just know that the PD converter will ALWAYS be the best converter for your particular configuration.
