I know you should not exceed 12.6V in the pack (4.2 x 3), but beyond that I could only conjecture. Yes, R/C hobby chargers are not cheap; they have tons of flexibility and capability (the right tool for the job), but since your investment is nil you can afford to experiment with whatever's on hand. (For you, that doesn't include solar, unfortunately... I bet a panel and an adjustable controller would work wonders.)
