Are all 2012 and newer Cummins ILS engines used in motor homes California emission certified?I'm in the process of trying to get my Phaeton California registered and the DMV wants proof that it is CA certified. I was under the impression that all of these large Cummins engines were CA certified.Wrong?Anybody know for sure?Ron

Why don't you contact Cummins directly on Monday?

Yeah, that's probably what i will have to do. I'm sure, however, that they will want the engines serial number and i don't have that, nor do I know how to get it.Any ideasRon

Did you possibly get a build sheet with the coach when you bought it?If you did, it would have the model and S/N listed for everything on your coach including tires, engine, trans, .. everything.I'm sure someone here will step up with the location of the S/N for that engine if you don't have a build sheet.

Yes, I do have build sheet, but the engine is not listed. It was on my previous coach, but is not on this one.I believe the serno for the engine is on the label that located on top of the timing chain cover. Unfortunately, it is at such an angle that I can't read it from up on top. It looks like I can come up from under the coach...but it's gonna be a tight and dirty squeeze.

Usually a white tag on the driver's side of the valve cover with the serial #.

God, I hate braggers. Wish i lived there also. SKY high taxes in our state.Tax bill for our house, $9,500. Nothing special, no Ocean view, Mountains, ETC.

You know, we have been to the local DMV about five times, twice to the Bakersfield DMV and have talked to the main office in Sacramento at least a half dozen times.....all on trying to get this coach registered. In almost every case, the agent handling our problem gave us different answers. One even charged us twice for the registration fees ($1800) and they still haven't refunded us.

I have searched the DMV site and I have yet to find anything that said diesel motorhomes over 14K are exempt. Can you provide me with the location of that rule? I would love to go into the DMV with that info in hand. I know that they are exempt from smog inspections, but I think they still have to conform to CARB regulations.....and that is what the DMV is pushing us for.

Anyway, I think I have found the info on the engine tag that will satisfy the DMV and will be taking the coach to them tomorrow for inspection. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Having just registered mine in California from another state I don't think smog compliance should be an issue. Diesel motorhomes over 14K lbs are smog exempt. The girl at DMV wasn't sure and was going to send us to a smog station until we asked her to double check and she did some further investigation. Read the DMV site yourself and be knowledgable when you go in. What was required was a ViN verification which must be done by either DMV or an LEO. She did the VIN verification and we had our plates in hand in less than 30 mins. Your coach mfg should have the engine number on file.

Unfortunately, just "knowing" this, is NOT proof to the California DMV....really a bunch of hard headed bureaucrats who insists that they have actually "see" the proof. I understand that they have rules that they have to adhere to, but it just stands to reason that if "all" are built to CARB specs, then you shouldn't have to see the proof.

Your Cummins has and engine ID label on the side of the timing cover (viewed sideways) that gives HP, Torque, Eng. S/N.

Scott, the label is pretty much on top of the timing cover, as I have mentioned previously. I've found the label but due to hoses and wire bundles running across it, I'm unable to read the serno that is on the top left corner of the label. I think I can read it from below, but it's gonna take some contortion to get up in beside the engine.

However, I have just recently noticed that on the label, there is "EPA CARB"....which tells me that it is CARB (California Air Resource Board" certified.

We'll see.
