My rig does NOT have a black wire and a white one, it has a red one and a white one.
My suggestion, figure out which is which: with the battery disconnected, plug the rig into shore power and stick a voltmeter across the battery leads, the voltmeter will tell you which is negative and which is positive. Unless of course, you've burned out something in the converter charging system by having the battery wired backwards first.
