DC powered A/C

There are now a couple of companies supplying the auto industry with 12V DC A/C compressor, mainly for use in electric/hybrid vehicles.

There are also a few companies making 24V DC A/C compressors for the truck/bus market.

Has any of this moved into the RV market and does any one have any first hand experience with it ?

I work in automotive HVAC and the only compressors I've seen for Hybrid use are high voltage 350v to 400v compressors...
  • I wonder how they get enough torque with such low voltage. These motors are probably crazy expensive digital motors using rare earth magnets.

It will be forever before they make it into the RV market, I can't see the demand being that strong. Judging from the posts on these forum, the majority of RV owners travel from one full hookup resort to another. AC powered A/C is pretty efficient and doesn't need massive cabling and the other infrastructure needed to deal with huge DC currents.
